What is The Lantern Trail?
The Lantern Trail is a printable fall escape room and mystery-writing resource for grades 3–5. A strange shape has appeared beside the pumpkin patch. Students investigate the story, work through six challenge stations, earn clue letters, and reveal a final mystery word. Then they plan and write a gentle fall mystery of their own.
It brings close reading, problem solving, math, and purposeful writing into one coordinated resource. Choose the math path that fits your class, select the pages, and use the teacher guide to prepare.
Use seasonal excitement for meaningful work
A seasonal activity still needs a clear learning purpose. Otherwise, the time spent finding puzzles, matching a reading passage, and inventing a writing follow-up becomes another planning task.
Here, the mystery gives students a reason to read closely and solve problems. The writing follow-up asks them to become the authors. Use their explanations and finished stories to see what they understood and where they need another model or a question from you.
What is included?
- 29 student pages in a student PDF.
- A 16-page teacher guide to support preparation and teaching.
- Eight classroom tools pages in a separate PDF.
The 53-page total includes covers, directions, six alternate math pages, answer keys, signs, support materials, and license pages. It is the total file length, rather than a count of separate activities. Math stations use two pages each to leave room for models and equations.
Review the TPT listing for the available preview, current price, file details, and license terms.
How to use the fall escape room
- Prepare the path. Read the teacher guide, choose the math pages for your learners, and organize the station materials.
- Introduce the mystery. Read the original story and invite students to notice details and make predictions.
- Solve and explain. Work through the six stations, collect the clue letters, and reveal the final mystery word. Ask students to explain how they reached their answers.
- Write a new mystery. Use the writing follow-up to plan and develop a gentle fall mystery, drawing on what students noticed as readers.
Set the pace around your students’ reading, discussion, and writing needs. You can plan the escape-room work and the writing follow-up as separate parts of your instruction.
